Dear Roberge Elementary School Families:

It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that I welcome everyone back to Roberge for the 2018-2019 school year! Last year, we worked as a learning community to emphasize the various tenets of our Portrait of a Graduate. Specifically, we placed a particular focus on the importance of being able to communicate and collaborate effectively in the classroom.  I was so impressed with the efforts of our teachers and students, who embraced this initiative and found ways to spark continued growth throughout the school year. This year, our focus will be shifting to find ways to support our students in the areas of critical and creative thinking.  Through rubric work, reflective thinking, and consistent dialogue, our students will discover ways in which they can approach their work from a different, more analytical perspective.  Undoubtedly, this is challenging work.  It requires a talented staff and students who possess a growth mindset as they encounter difficult tasks.  However, with every challenge comes an opportunity, and I could not be more excited at the tremendous learning opportunities that await our students this year.

We will also begin the process of implementing our new math curriculum this year. Over the past three years, a great deal of work was completed with our regional partners to develop a curriculum where conceptual knowledge is the foundation upon which students build procedural fluency.  The curriculum follows a “workshop” model in many ways and is aimed at helping students make important connections, engage in meaningful, substantive conversations, and persevere through challenging, complex problems.  Ultimately, the curriculum helps to support the notion that all students can be successful in the area of mathematics. Our teachers are excited to begin working with their students on this new approach to math!

Our students benefit most when we all come together to ensure that their needs are being met and they are able to reach their full potential.  I deeply value our partnership and am confident that we can best support the students of Roberge as a collective unit. I want nothing more than for the students of Roberge to have a school year that is enriching, inspiring, and enjoyable.  Together, we can help make that happen!

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns; I look forward to working with you.

Warm regards,

Stephen A. Wren, Principal
