When Your Child is Sick

Children should stay home from school if they have any of the following symptoms:

Fever of 99℉ or above: Children must be without fever and off medication for at least 24 hours before they may return to school.
Vomiting/diarrhea: If your child has vomited or had diarrhea, they should remain home for at least 24 hours.
Sore throat: If your child has a sore throat, (cough drops are not given) and you suspect they could have strep throat, or if you have had them tested for strep throat at their doctor’s, do not send them to school until you have negative results. If they have strep throat, they must have been on antibiotics for 24 hours before returning to school.
Cough: Persistent coughing that may be disruptive to the class.
Cold or runny nose: If nasal discharge is not clear or excessive they should remain home. 

Your child may be sent home from school if they have any of the following symptoms:

Fever of 99℉ or above.

Vomiting or diarrhea. Any student who states that they have vomited or had diarrhea in the past 24 hours will be sent home.

Persistent, disruptive cough.

Nasal discharge that is not clear and /or excessive.

Pink eye and any discharge from the eye.

*Any student may be sent home from school at the discretion of the School Nurse, if it is felt that the child is not in optimal health.

If your child will be absent from school: 

The School Nurse must be notified by 9:00 a.m. either by phone call (201-358-4006, ext 3020) or by e-mail to: [email protected]
Any child absent from school may not come in to participate in special activities such as class parties, plays, trips, assembly programs, concerts, or sports.

Return to School: 

Children may return to school after they have been free of symptoms for a minimum of 24 hours and feel well enough to function in school for the full day.
